Jesus walked on this earth for thirty three years, but only to minister for three years. How is that possible, to only have three years to accomplish what He was sent to do? Do you remember when He was baptized by John in the Jordan River? Matt. 3:1-17 tells the story, but lets focus in on verses 16-17: “And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him,” “and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” So we see that God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, came to Jesus to help Him to complete His work. For three years Jesus moved in power and authority from His Father, with the help of the Holy Spirit. He was never left alone. Although Jesus is God, He was also just a human being walking on this earth. Jesus was only able to be in one place at one time. That is why there were healings, but Jesus had to be present in body for them to take place. So Jesus appointed twelve men, and He gave them the same authority that He had. Matt 10:1, 7-tells us the instructions that he gave. They were to preach, have authority over unclean spirits, and cast them out, to heal every kind of disease and sickness, and raise the dead. So, basically, He gave them the same authority that He had on this earth. They had seen Him do these things so they knew what they were supposed to do. He also told them that, in John 17:7, it is to our advantage that He go away, so that the Helper can come, meaning the Holy Spirit. So you ask, why do I need the Holy Spirit to come to me? Very simple, to be able to do the things He (Jesus), has instructed us to do. Without the Holy Spirit, Jesus did not have the power to see miracles performed, and without the Holy Spirit, neither will we. I know what you are saying, when I received Christ into my life as my savior, I received the Holy Spirit. That is correct, you did. It was an inward receiving. If that was all you needed, than you must be on your way to accomplishing everything that God has for you, on your own, and knowing that you have everything you need. Is this true in your life? When you ask the Holy Spirit to come in, then you give Him power over your life, to do the things not only in you, but through you. That’s where the power part comes in. You see, Jesus is just one man, but the Spirit of God is in all of us. That means when we come together IN HIS NAME, that we are bringing the Holy Spirit with us. There is power in numbers. Jesus said where two are gathered in my name, ask anything (John 14:14)…, and one can put a thousand to flight, two can put ten thousand to flight (Lev. 26:8, Deut. 32:30). He isn’t talking about birds here, he is talking about the enemy that try’s to come to kill, steal, and destroy. The ones he wants to attack are us, because God love us so much and wants to draw us closer to Him, and has entrusted us with His Spirit, His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our help, our teacher, our comforter. He guides us in all truth. He is everything we need to keep going forward, even when the days look dark. He will lead and guide us through the tough times and into everything God has waiting for us. He told the disciples, I have to go away so the Holy Spirit will come, and you will do greater works than what you have seen me do. Is He talking about a bunch of super Christians? I don’t think so. I believe He is saying, I am just one person, but if the Holy Spirit come, he will be in all of you. If he is in all of us, we will be able to do more work than just one man was able to accomplish by himself, but we must be in unity with the Holy Spirit and go forth in the love of the Father. Ephesians 3:16-17 “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you being rooted and grounded in love”. I pray today that you might earnestly seek to have a deeper relationship with Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit. There is POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. Linda Brownlow, PhD. |
